More Than a Tragedy.
This Is a Movement.

OUR STORY

Hit While Helping was founded after the tragic loss of 25-year-old Keagan Spencer, a third-generation tow truck operator struck and killed while doing what he always did—helping others. His father, Matt Spencer, turned heartbreak into action by creating this organization to honor his son’s life and protect others from the same fate.

OUR MISSION

Hit While Helping was founded to honor the life of Keagan Spencer, who was tragically struck and killed at just 25 years old while doing what he loved – helping others on the roadside. Out of this unimaginable loss comes our mission: to turn Keagan’s story into change by raising awareness, strengthening Move Over laws, and building a culture of compassion and responsibility on our roads.Through Keagan’s spirit of service, we fight to protect every responder and Good Samaritan, so that those who help can always make it home to their families. His story is our mission, and his legacy will save lives.

THE CALL

Every time someone slows down, moves over, or shares this message—lives are saved. This isn’t just a cause. It’s a movement built on loss, fueled by love, and driven by the belief that no one should die while helping others. Stand with us.

From a Loving Father's Heart

In Memory of Keagan Spencer

Because no family should endure this loss again.

On November 4, 2023, Keagan Spencer, a 25-year-old third-generation tow truck operator from Hastings, Michigan, was struck and killed while working  along a Michigan Highway. His truck was clearly marked. His 16 month old daughter, sat waiting inside the cab. He never made it back.

Keagan wasn’t just doing his job—he was doing what he was known for: helping. He was a devoted father, a loving fiancé, and the kind of man who would stop for a stranger without hesitation. He lived his life in service to others.

“Keagan was in a tow truck from the day he was born,” said his father, Matt Spencer. “This was in his blood. We just never thought it would end like this.”

After Keagan’s death, Matt didn’t retreat into grief—he turned that heartbreak into purpose.

Hit While Helping™ was born from that moment.

Matt founded this nonprofit in his son’s memory, and in honor of every roadside and emergency worker who never came home. What began as a tribute is now a national movement to save lives, raise awareness, and fight for better protections.

Through Hit While Helping, the Spencer family has made it their mission to ensure that Keagan’s story isn’t repeated.
